From an early age, Lorenzo Miller realized he loved dogs.

Growing up in the inner city, the 6-year-old saw the stray dogs in his neighborhood knocking over garbage cans looking for food and wanted to help them. Soon, he began to bring the dogs into his home, but was not allowed to keep them. He had to smuggle them into his bedroom and trained them, knowing they had to be quiet in order to keep them hidden.

By the age of 10, his parents realized this was more than a phase and sent him off to train with various professional dog trainers.

This was the start of what has proved to be a lifelong career. Lorenzo's Dog Training

“It picked me,” he said of his dog training career.

Lorenzo paid his way through college by providing in-home dog training. He developed his training technique after working with numerous dog trainers in the late 1970’s and 1980’s. He studied their methods and took the best each technique had to offer and developed his own style of training.

His method is based on the six types of dog personalities, as each one offers a different challenge.

Once basic training is complete, advanced training begins, where dogs go off their leash. At this point, they can begin the “working dog” phase of their lives. Lorenzo believes most dogs are working dogs and once properly trained, can make an impact.

This impact is a testament to the thousands of dogs he has saved since entering the industry.

Miller, who owns a pack of dogs himself including six german shepherds, a pit bull mix, boxer and a border collie, has saved the lives of many dogs whose owners were at their wits end because of their dog’s behavior. Instead of going back to the pound, abandoned or even worse, Miller was able to create a happy home environment for them.

Now, he is an industry leader.

“I wanted to do this as a career, but when I first started, it was not considered a lucrative industry,” said Miller.

“It’s different today, due to the sensationalism of cable TV,” he added.

Since its incorporation in 1987, Lorenzo’s Dog Training Team has been responsible for the training of thousands of dogs and trainers in the Cleveland area. He is now placing trainers all over the world by recruiting, boarding, training and hiring qualifying candidates to spread the Lorenzo’s technique and philosophy into the homes and businesses of dog owners around the world.

“Most of my trainers are formerly clients,” he said.

In the age of the pandemic, the dog training industry, like many others, has suffered its ups and downs.

While his work paused in March, April and May, July turned out to be his company’s best month yet, which came on the heels of high adoption numbers.

These adoptions have led to more behavioral challenges for pet owners, who were able to spend lockdown with their pets, but then had to return to work.

Instead of performing in-person training, he reinvented his business and Miller and his trainers switched to online training, where they had successes with certain personalities.

Today, Miller is in a race to get his trainers established on the west coast, where the dog training industry is thriving. It was always his dream to expand his business and he is eager to make his company a stronger name in the industry.
