Along with many of Cleveland's local newscasters and hundreds of organizations, schools, businesses and political figures in countries around the world, the staff of Zinner & Co. wore purple yesterday in support of Purple Day, the Global Day of Epilepsy Awareness.

We decorated our office in purple, the international color for epilepsy chosen for its association with solitude, and ate purple goodies. We are also sponsoring a Jeans Day where all proceeds will support the Epilepsy Association, an organization I am proud to act as both an advocate and member of the Board of Directors.

Purple Day is now celebrated on every continent in the world, including Antarctica. The Terminal Tower downtown was beautifully lit up in purple, and Governor John Kasich declared March 26, 2014 as Purple Day throughout Ohio.

Epilepsy affects about 2.3 million adults and 467,711 children 0-17 years of age in the United States, more than Parkinson's disease, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and muscular dystrophy combined. Of the major chronic medical conditions, epilepsy is among the least understood even though 1 in 3 adults knows someone with the disorder.

You can donate and learn more about the great strides the Epilepsy Association is taking to help people cope with and manage seizure disorders through their website, www.epilepsyinfo.org.
